The Efficacy of Peroneal Nerve Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) for the Reduction of Bradykinesia in Parkinson’s Disease: An Assessor Blinded Randomised Controlled Trial (STEPS II). EME Project: NIHR131791
The STEPS II study follows on from our STEPS study (see recent research below). The study aims to determine if FES applied to the common peroneal nerve using the ODFS Pace improves the mobility of people who have Parkinson’s. In our earlier work we showed that FES may have a clinically meaningful training effect on walking speed, indicating an overall reduction in bradykinesia. This 7 centre 234 participant study aims to confirm this observation and to investigate the mechanism that might be involved. The study began recruiting in February 2024. Participants can join the study in Salisbury, Birmingham, Sheffield, Leeds, Prestwick and Swansea.
The study is led by Chief investigator Paul Taylor (Salisbury) and managed by the Peninsula Clinical Trials Unit (Plymouth University) with partners from Southampton and Exeter Universities. Funding is from the National Institute for Health Research.
