Expected pathway

Healthcare professional referral or self-referral – Lower limb FES for walking assistance
Assessment clinic 
  • Sustainability of FES determined (please note FES is not suitable for all those with relevant conditions)
Set up 2 clinic appointments
  • Teach the use of the device
  • Take outcome measures
Adult

Follow up at 6, 18, 44 and 72 weeks and then every year for as long as FES is used

Child

Follow up at 6, 18, 44 and 72 weeks and then twice a year for as long as FES is used. If the patient’s condition in maintained then FES treatment is complete.

If the patient’s condition declines over this period,  FES may be recommenced, subject to funding. The sequence and timing of appointments may be varied depending on the patient’s requirements.

Upper limb and facial treatment pathway

Assessment clinic

Suitability for FES determined (please note FES is not suitable for all those with relevant conditions)

Set up: 1 clinic appointments

Teach the use of the device

Take outcome measures

Follow up at 2, 8, 16 and 24 weeks.  FES treatment is then withdrawn for 1 month.  If the patient’s condition in maintained then FES treatment is complete.

Abdominal stimulation for Control of constipation treatment pathway

Assessment clinics

2 appointments separated by 6 weeks.  The device is used daily at home.

Follow up at 3, 6 months and then yearly for as long as FES is used.

The sequence and timing of appointments may be varied depending on the patient’s requirements.

All treatment packages include the cost of the equipment, consumables and clinic time.
